When to monetize as an influencer

Marketing is hard. It is hard because finding people who might want to buy what you sell is not as easy as it looks. That is, until now.

Influencer marketing is the dominant trend in marketing right now for one reason: targeting. Influencers of every niche are just waiting for your company to come offer them money in exchange for publicity. Or are they?

There comes a time in the life of a social media influencer when they start to be able to partner with brands to make money off of their content. For many, this is an easy decision. Make money for posting on social media? For sure! How could you say no?

My Vlogs are at this point. At the time of this post, I get around 5000 views per video, and lots of engagement. I have a very specific niche market; students within Concordia University, in Montreal.

But, like many influencers, I care about my content, my authenticity, and my followers. I am supported by people who agree with my worldview, and that includes any brands that I choose to use and would promote on my channel. If I were to be disingenuous about the brands I promote, simply monetizing my channel for the sake of making money, I would lose trust and “influence” immediately.

This poses a problem. How do influencers (especially micro-influencers, with only a few thousand followers) decide when is the right time to accept the offer and promote a company?

I think that is the wrong question, it is not a matter of when to accept, but who to accept. What company is in line with what you believe, and what you feel comfortable promoting? If you are going to take money in exchange for advertising, does it feel like you are compromising your integrity? If so, probably a good idea not to do it!

If you are getting an offer now, it means you are valuable. If you are valuable, that means there will be more than one company interested, and as you continue to grow, there will be more and more. Be patient, and find the right company. If you are at a point where you want to monetize and you don’t have the right company, reach out! More often than not, you will be able to find someone who is interested!

If you aren’t getting offers, just keep making great content. At the end of the day, that is what is important! Your influence is in your personality, creativity, and individuality. Don’t lose it for a few bucks.
